WE FED MERLIN UPON RETURNING TO THE cabin. Then we changed into pajamas and fell into bed. Gunner had refrained from drinking so I could celebrate with Poet without worrying about having to drive, but I was surprisingly sober as I tried to close my eyes.

“What are you thinking?” he asked after several minutes. The darkness was thick in the room.

“How do you know I was thinking anything? How do you know I wasn’t sleeping?”

“You breathe differently when you sleep. And you don’t clutch your hands into fists when you finally let go.” He wrapped his hand around my fist to draw attention to the fact that I did indeed look as if I was about to throw a punch.

“Sorry.” I forced my hand to unclench. “I guess I’m a little worked up.”

“Just a little,” he chuckled. “It’s okay.” He slipped his arm under my waist and drew me to him.

I rested my head on his shoulder and my hand on his chest. I was tired, but sleep felt elusive.

“Will you dream of the ice man tonight?” he asked.

That was a good question. “I don’t know. Maybe his whole goal was to force me to open a portal. If so, problem solved. I opened it, and I’m good.”

“It does feel as if he was trying to lead you to a specific outcome, doesn’t it?”

“Pretty much,” I confirmed. “I wonder what that will mean when it’s all said and done. Will you have to open a portal to win?”

“I’m more curious about why it appears he’s trying to teach me a hard lesson when he’s likely supposed to be working with Skadi to end me.”

“We don’t know that Skadi wants to kill you.”

“No, but because Skadi likely wants to ally herself with Bonnie, I doubt she’s my friend. Plus, well, there’s the Emma problem. I don’t know how I feel about Emma’s part in all of this.”

“You wanted to kill her not long after we took her into custody,” Gunner noted. “You didn’t, which I’m sure your parents are grateful for, but there was a time when you were considering it. Do you regret not doing it?”

“No.” I meant it. “I don’t think everything that happened was her fault. Sure, she could’ve made better choices, but she was separated from our family too, and she was in a lot worse shape than I was. I don’t hate her.”

“But you don’t think you can love her,” he surmised.

“I’m not sure I can love any of them. They feel like strangers.”

“They might not if you spent some time with them.”

I pinched his side. “I don’t need a lecture,” I warned as he squirmed. “I’m trying to figure it out. I just need space to do it.”

“Fine.” He lightly slapped my hand away. “Stop pinching me.”

“Stop saying annoying things.”

We lapsed into silence again. I was the one who broke it this time. “I might believe what Cernunnos said. Don’t get me wrong, I’m guessing he will manipulate me at some point, but I think he was honest tonight.
